Architects’ daughter
2015
These photographs were taken in London, a city both of my parents studied in as architects. I grew up creating a mental map of London out of their descriptions of the city when they had been there, in the 1970s and ‘80s. A cold city made out of columns of heavy brick and stone buildings with little variation in height, all built on the foundation of a chaotic street plan that resembled more of a spider’s web than a city grid. I arrived 30 years later to discover that city interwoven with sleek contemporary architecture; perforated with glassy skyscrapers. My experience of photographing London became a process of reconciling two cities through the camera: a mental map built from inherited memory, and the present day city.
Architects’ daughter was exhibited in the Jacob Lawrence Gallery, University of Washington in April 2015.
